Energy Efficiency in Residential Sector

ICASEA Electrical Energy Efficiency programs are designed to maximize copper's contribution to energy conservation, environment friendliness, safety and effectiveness of sustainable generation, transmission, distribution and usage of electrical energy.

The program pillared three main areas, namely policy & regulation (i.e. development of policies, codes and Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for major electrical appliances), supply chain engagement (i.e. integration of major manufacturers to produce and promote energy efficient products) and demand creation (i.e. development of market transformation programs & financing mechanisms to grow penetration of energy efficient products).

Objective

  • To increase the awareness and market share of energy efficient household appliances in the Southeast Asian markets (primarily air-conditioners, lighting, fans, water heaters)

Main Scope
i) Regulation - development of policies, codes and Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for major electrical appliances

ii) Supply Chain Engagement - integration of major manufacturers to produce and promote efficient products

iii) Demand Creation - Development of market transformation programs & financing mechanisms to grow penetration of energy efficient products

Strategic Development

  • Collaborated with Vietnam Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) to conduct National Energy End-use and Appliance Saturation Field Study to establish:
    • Trend of electricity consumption by appliances in households
      • Rate of growth of appliances load in terms of electricity
      • Type of appliances and their electricity consumption
      • Current efficiency level of the appliances
      • Potential electricity saving with energy efficient appliances
      • Availability of standards versus energy efficient appliances
    • Assisted MOIT to develop energy policy and prioritisation of electrical appliances for S&L and respective Work Plan
  • Planning Ahead - 2010 & Beyond
    • To establish Vietnam standards & labelling (S&L) priorities and Implementation Plans with Ministry of Industry & Trade and International Funding Organizations
    • To devise detailed plans with Department of Energy, Philippines for Aircon MEPS and action plans for market transformation activities
    • To develop implementation plan for MEPS and S&L for Indonesia on air-conditioners
    • To develop strategic approach to increase penetration of solar water heaters with MOIT and Ho Chi Minh City Energy Conservation Centre as market study on solar water heater is already completed.
