Copper and its alloys have been used by human civilization for over six thousand years. The strength, durability, resistance to corrosion, aesthetic qualities and workability of copper contributed greatly to the development of early civilizations. More recently, copper's intrinsic properties of high thermal conductivity, high electrical conductivity and antimicrobial efficacy have been essential to air conditioning systems, high-efficiency electrical motors, electronics connectors, high-speed/high-bandwidth data communications, and as surfaces that prevent marine biofouling in heat exchangers, sea water desalination plants and aquaculture cages.
A key initiative within the ICA is its Technology program. It is the goal of the Technology initiative at the ICA to continue to keep copper at the cutting edge of technology.
- Focus and sustain efforts on a few high-potential emerging technology/market domains, including:
- Maintain global R&D efforts while emphasizing commercialization in the most appropriate geographic regions
- When possible, manage commercialization of R&D through venture capital-like practices
- Leverage external funding and consortiums to amplify R&D and accelerate commercialization
The ICA has published a Copper Applications Technology Roadmap, a strategic planning document that describes key technical areas for potential copper development.
The roadmap was developed from inputs by scores of copper industry experts and scientists from around the world, and it aims to guide collaborative, pre-competitive research efforts among copper producers and fabricators, copper using industries, universities, government programs, entrepreneurs, and independent technologists.
The fundamental properties of copper have enabled it to meet society's needs throughout history, and it is these characteristics that the industry must continue to investigate in order to uncover new ways copper can drive innovation. For more info, visit http://www.coppertech.org/.
