PT Freeport Indonesia (PT-FI) is an affiliate of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (FCX), which is the world's lowest cost copper producer and one of the world's largest producers of copper and gold from its mines in Papua, Indonesia. The company signed its first Contract of Work with the Government of Indonesia in 1967, and renewed it in 1991, for the right to explore, mine, process and market minerals.
Since its preliminary operations in 1972, the company has been exporting concentrate containing copper, gold and silver to traders and smelters around the world. In 1999 the company began supplying concentrate to the first copper smelter in Indonesia located in Gresik, East Java.
