Affiliate of Mitsubishi Materials Corporation, PT Smelting is Indonesia's first copper smelter and refinery. Its Gresik Smelter & Refinery, located at Gresik, East Java, started commercial operation in early 1999 with a capacity of 200,000 metric tons of refined copper cathode annually from copper concentrate produced by PT Freeport Indonesia. At the end of June 2001, its copper cathodes were registered on the list of LME Grade A. The Smelter uses the Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting & Converting Process (Mitsubishi Process), a commercially proven multi-furnace method of continuous and environmentally sound technologies. In May 2004, PT Smelting will increase its refining capacity up to 250,000 MT/Y of refined copper cathode.
